How Do You Think This Game Ends?
Everyone enjoys playing as a hero; someone powerful, strong, courageous, with an equally virtuous heart. But what if you didn’t? What if you wanted to play as the weak, ugly, pathetic creature that’s always getting beaten up and ridiculed by everyone else? Then The Lord of the Rings: Gollum just might be for you. We have seen almost every story of the characters surrounding Gollum; Frodo, Aragorn, Talion, the list goes on. Soon we will get to play as Gollum himself as he obsesses over the Ring. It’s the game literally dozens of people asked for!
Despite my skepticism, playing as such a morally ambiguous and tortured character like Gollum could be pretty interesting. Edge Magazine briefly previewed the upcoming game in this month’s issue. In this segment, we learn that Daedalic Entertainment’s game will be launching on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X. It was originally slated for release on PC and “relevant console platforms” at the time of its release, but now that has narrowed to the next generation. Because Gollum is not the heroic, sword-wielding type, the gameplay will involve a lot of stealth mechanics, as well as incorporate his dual-personality that was so captivating in the books and films.
Obviously, no release date has been given, but the goal to release on PS5 and Xbox Series X suggests that it will come out sometime in the next year to ten years? They have time. It will be interesting to see what kind of story Daedalic Entertainment tells with this game, considering all the concrete stories Gollum is involved with and the few gaps in his journey there are to create something new in.
