It should really be called Top of 2018
Like every major game developer, Valve has been keeping track of its games and how well they do when it comes to earning the sweet dosh. As the end of the year draws closer, Valve has compiled what it is calling Steam’s Best of 2018. This is a list of Steam’s top performing games this year. It includes such categories as Top Sellers, Top New Releases, Top Selling VR Games, Top Early Access Graduates, and Most Simultaneous Players.
The Top Sellers, Top Selling VR Games, and Top Early Access Graduates categories have rankings that the games achieve. These are platinum, gold, silver, and bronze. Within these rankings, the games appear in no particular order. This means there is no #1 selling game or #1 whatever. They are more like milestones than anything.
What measures performance?
With the exception of Most Simultaneous Players, each category is measured by the amount of money the games generated, not by quality or any other measure of “best”. As mentioned above, based on just the milestones the games achieved, there is no way to tell which game out performed the rest. However, there are games that appear at the highest milestones of different categories.
Warframe, GTA V, PUBG, DOTA 2, Rainbow Six: Siege, Monster Hunter: World, and CS:GO all hit the highest mark in both Top Sellers and Most Simultaneous Players. Two VR games that were the most successful overall and during their month of release were Skyrim VR and VR Kanjojo. I don’t know what VR Kanjojo is, but it looks like a sexy-game, which totally explains its popularity. The Forest and Subnautica were both early access games that were officially released this year. They both achieved the silver ranking in Top Sellers.
These games raked in the most $, but what are your best games of 2018? Let us know in the comments below. And be sure to check out the nominees for the Steam awards this year.
