Freebie Alert! Epic Games is Currently Giving Away the Original Unreal

Unreal Gold is Celebrating its 20th Anniversary by Going Free

In celebration of its 20th anniversary, Epic Games is giving away the original 1998 Unreal video game on Steam and GOG.

Can you believe it’s been 20 years already? For those that don’t know, Unreal was the first game to be released using Epic’s Unreal engine, which was quite the looker even back then. Nowadays, the same engine — now in its fourth iteration — can be found powering hundreds of games including Gears of War 4, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, and the mega-popular Fortnite.

Back in 1998, very few games were able to compete graphically with Unreal’s impressive textures, lighting, and large landscapes. While the original game won’t win any graphics awards these days, it’s still interesting to go back and check it out just to get an idea of how the tech has evolved.

Visuals aside, Unreal was also a pretty darn good game. It controlled smoothly and played great. Development and design were handled by Epic and Digital Extremes, who is probably best known for their work on the free-to-play competitive shooter, Warframe.

The free download takes the form of Unreal Gold, which includes the original game and its expansion, Return to Na Pali. Make sure you snag this ASAP because it’s only free until Friday, May 25th.
