An Open World of Player Choice from an Indie Developer
Here’s a new take on the RPG genre: a third-person game where players can customize their own characters and build their own towns. Winterfall, developed by Clan Latria, offers a rich simulation experience where players find themselves in a dark age. You’re left to your own devices to build a house and a lasting legacy.
The narrative of Winterfall is essentially what you make of it as you settle, build, and interact with the environment. Players can choose between three tribes and embark on the adventure of legacy building. Imagine Game of Thrones, except your building your own Fantasy house of simply joining someone else’s. Thereafter, your legacy is crafted around your interactions with the world and the permanent marks you leave. This isn’t simply a game about making war on others. Combat has lasting consequences, so it’s up to you to pick your battles.
Winterfall is practically a sandbox experience filled with more meaning than your typical open world. It was constructed with player choice in mind, so you can take advantage of systems to create a playthrough that’s solely your own. Lead designer Fab Mariani revealed the goal behind the IP in a press release:
“I have long been frustrated by the focus on ‘content’, believing, from tabletop RPGs and fun experiences with all kinds of games, that focusing on systems instead would make for far more engaging experiences. Winterfall is my long-laboured attempt to explore that point.”
Gameplay in Winterfall is a suite of systems, so if this RPG experience has piqued your interest, here are the features you can look forward to:
- Experience a vast world with different ecosystems affecting gameplay, inspired by the lands of Corsica and spoken it its language
-
Choose from three different cultures, each with their own history to uncover, culture to rebuild and starting place
-
A deep character creation system where each character has their own equipment, backstory, equipment, personality, and ambitions
-
Explore the wilds in the open-world Wilderness mode, gathering artifacts and supplies
-
Manage, upgrade and defend your Sanctuary, forging bonds between your characters
-
No gratuitous violence as a gameplay trope. Killing has consequences and ramifications in a character’s life
-
Play as multiple characters in the same grand adventure.
Winterfall is planned for PC release in Q1 2019. Stay tuned for updates as time goes by.
