One of Them May Be a Vertical Shooter
During a Pax East Panel, hosted by Square Enix, some of the minds behind NieR Automata were present to answer the audience’s question. The panel seats were occupied by Director Yoko Taro, Producer Yosuke Saito, and Composer Keiichi Okabe.Together, they gave fans an outlook on where the NieR series is going.
According to Saito, there is a 50% chance that we’ll see another NieR installment. He explained that part of the reason is so that he can work with the talented team behind Automata again. However, the chance of seeing another game depends on whether director Yoko Taro wants to make another one. As the eccentric genius behind the series, Taro would be the driving force behind the creative DNA of the next game. That said, Taro claimed he doesn’t like to make sequels.
Since the protagonists in NieR Automata are Androids, Taro came up with a sequel he thinks might work. He figures he’d make them into bugs and have a bug fighting game. Generally, he does not like to make sequels. Yoko Taro was then asked if he would make a prequel where the machines won against humanity. Ideally, in his mind, that prequel would be a vertical shooter. Saito mentioned the possibility of crowdfunding the game before Taro said that Square Enix wouldn’t fund such a project. I can’t say whether he was joking or not, and I doubt many people can.
Ultimately, producer Saito said they may “open another door into the NieR Universe.” Of course, if the team was working on another NieR game as we speak, we wouldn’t know. Recent job postings may serve the clue. Stay tuned for updates as they arrive.
