Sea of Thieves’ New Update Will Include a Fee for Dying

Davy Jones Wants Your Money in Sea of Thieves

According to Rare, Sea of Thieves players shall suffer a new charge upon hitting the depths. Dying will come alongside the cost of gold, and the fee will be contingent on the manner of death.

Along with sundry upcoming changes to Sea of Thieves, the developer believes that a surcharge on top of death shall steer players away from unnecessary engagements. For those who haven’t experienced death in the game (or have not played it), death normally means you respawn close to where you died. Today, any pirate can engage in high-risk antics on the high seas, but once the patch drops, players may be less amenable to misadventures. “[T]he more avoidable the death, the less patience the Captain will have when we enable this feature!” the release notes say.

Personally, I’m a little confused on what Rare intends with this patch, especially since news of the new death fee came with an additional note from the developer:

“Please note, we never intended to charge players for PvP related deaths, as we understand the negative impact this would have on player experience.”

Does that mean Rare will still charge for PvP deaths? Or does it mean they do not intend to do so? Feel free to comment your thoughts down below. Once the new patch is released, we hope to have specific numbers on the costs of dying in Sea of Thieves. After launching just a few days ago, the game has experienced a number of server issues, among other things. Therefore, we expect many new patches and content updates to roll out in the coming months.
