Sea of Thieves Death Charge Already Revoked

Players Were Predictably Outraged

Remember three days ago when we reported that Sea of Thieves was getting a death charge added, taking gold from players for dying? Well, Rare has already revoked said charge. Turns out taking money out of players’ pockets for such a thing was an objectively terrible idea.

Sea of Thieves death charge

Rare executive producer Joe Neate announced the features’ removal in a tweet, noting that they had “messed up with the messaging” regarding the proposed change. Indeed, there may have been a better way to implement this feature. After all, other games charge you for death. Although said charge is usually implemented in a way that fits with the game world. Like the cost of repairing armor, or a hefty hospital bill. Here, it would have been you getting robbed by Davey Jones. But why?

If Rare does decide to bring this feature back, they should make it cooler. Like, have Jones be an actual force in-game who’s power grows every time some hapless pirate loses their life, until he rises from the watery depths, powered by all that plundered loot. Or just don’t charge players for dying when it’s so easy to do so. In any case, Neate appreciated everyone’s “honest feedback and discussion” on the matter. Hopefully the team at Rare continues to be this receptive when it comes to player grievances.
