You Might Still Be Able to Play Demon’s Souls Online

The Online Mode Isn’t Dead Just Yet

Earlier this week, on Wednesday, the servers for Demon’s Souls were officially shut down. At the time, it seemed like the PS3 classic was going to only be playable in offline mode forever. That is, until fans of the game on Reddit found a way to host a temporary private server for online play.

“Despite the official servers going down the end of February, the community has already began working on a private server for the game to allow the online fuctionality to continue to exist,” explained a Reddit user. “This right now is only a temporary server that will be shutdown, alongside its source code to be published.”

Unfortunately, it seems like that multiplayer is still region-locked so players from different parts of the world can’t play together. Otherwise, features such as in-game messages from other players, seeing the “ghosts” of other players, and summoning special NPCs are able to work on the private server.

“I cannot believe this actually works. I see tons of phantoms, messages work, I’m floored by this,” said another Reddit user in the Demon’s Souls subreddit. “The server actually looks way more stable than Atlus’s own server. Wasn’t able to invade anyone, but that may just be down to being out of level range. Adding in how many people are playing online to the server login message was a nice touch too.”

Another member of the subreddit said that the co-op mode for the game also works: “I can confirm that Co-op works as well. I went through all of 3-2 tonight with a friend. No connection issues whatsoever. We even fought each other as the Old Monk a few times.”

“Legit, I’m not embarrassed to say this brought tears of joy to my eyes. The community is indebted to you. Tremendous thanks to all of you. Umbasa,” said one especially grateful subreddit member.

So Demon’s Souls fans, are you planning on diving back into the game’s online mode now? Let us know in the comments!
