God of War Sequels Will Continue to Explore Kratos and Atreus’ Relationship
One of the more interesting changes made to the hotly-anticipated God of War is the change from Greek to Norse mythology. After six games following Kratos’ journey of revenge in the Greek setting, we’d say we’re more than happy to see him move locations, one that seems to be a bit colder than we’re used to seeing in the series. And according to Aaron Kaufman, Sony Santa Monica’s Senior Online Community Strategist, it looks like the Norse setting will stick around in future sequels.
Kaufman was interviewed by JagatReview where he talked about the series’ new direction, the Norse mythology setting, the importance of Atreus, Kratos’ son, as well as what fans can expect with possible God of War sequels:
“God of War right now is about Kratos, and who he is as a character, and how he’s evolving,” Kaufman says. “This God of War is ‘Chapter 2’ of Kratos. We have ideas in our head of where we want to go. We know right now we want to stay in the Norse universe, we want to explore this relationship between a father and a son. We know they have a very specific destination to get to.”
“But we also know our fans out there are very savvy and smart,” Kaufman continues. “We wouldn’t just add Atreus to God of War if he were only a one-off. This is a fundamental big change. This being the beginning of chapter 2 allows Kratos to evolve and allows Atreus to come in as a new [vital] character. Where we go from here, you’ll just have to wait and see.”
It’ll be five years since the last game, God of War: Ascension, was released on PS3. Let’s hope that the wait between this new one and a sequel won’t be quite as long.
God of War releases exclusively for PS4 on April 20th. Make sure you check out our hands-on preview of the game’s beginning hours.
