PS4 System Update 5.50 Beta Leak Points to Supersampling Option for PS4 Pro and More

PS4 System Update 5.50 Beta is Live

Today Sony has begun rolling out invites to the beta of the PS4 system update 5.50. While Sony has not announced the features that they’re going to be putting into system software betas for PlayStation 4, users have started leaking details.

First of all, the upcoming 5.50 system update will add a system-wide supersampling option for PlayStation 4 Pro.

This will let you force games that support higher than 1080p resolutions to run at higher resolution and then scale it back down, giving a smoother image and helping minimize aliasing. That being said, most PS4 Pro enhanced games already either run with supersampling or have options that let you choose between this and enhancing graphics or performance at 1080p.

For those who are unfamiliar with supersampling, the PS4 Pro will render the game at a higher resolution internally, and then squeeze the image into 1920×1080 pixels, theoretically resulting in a sharper image quality. You can think of it as the opposite of Boost Mode. Instead of boosting frame rate, it’s supposed to improve visual quality, mostly in the antialiasing area.

Sony notes that “Results may differ depending on the games. In some games, image quality may not improve, or the frame rate may change.”

Another new element is “Teams” where you can with your friends, play games, or possibly even take part in competitions.

Also, you are now allowed to delete any notification and hide purchased content from the library to get rid of all those old betas and demos.

It’s possible that the system software update may include further new features, but for now, this is all we get.
