Nintendo Is Confident in Its Online Service for the Switch
At the beginning of this month, Nintendo finally confirmed that the paid online service for the Switch will launch this September. Now, during a recent Q&A session President Tatsumi Kimishima and Executive Officer Shinya Takahashi have revealed that this online service will be “worth the wait.”
Although details weren’t revealed at the time of the big announcement, a recent interview with Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima uncovered some exciting news. Of course, one of the biggest questions many have had, is about why the service for the Nintendo Switch has been delayed. When posited with this same question, Kimishima replied, “We view the online service as one component of our efforts to diversify how our games are played and to get people to play more of our games. That is why we want to apply substantial resources to the online service, with the thinking that we will devote our energies to making this a for-pay service.”
But is this online Switch service for everyone? Kimishima says that it has a lot to offer, however stated that they aren’t ready for a big reveal on all of the details. “As for how we plan to popularize the service, it is less about the mechanism and more a question of what kinds of products we can offer, and the spread of the service will depend on whether consumers want what we offer. Please give us a bit more time to announce more details about the service. I think that announcement will convey to you how we plan to popularize the service.” Shinya Takahashi, added, “We have some ideas about how to make Nintendo Switch Online appealing when it becomes a for-pay service, so I think our next announcement will be worth the wait.”
It will be interesting to see when more details about the online Switch service will surface, however it’s likely that we’ll receive more information around E3 in just a few months time. So far, we know that the service will feature online lobbies and voice chat (through the smartphone app) and will allow users access to a “classic game selection.”
