Nintendo Isn’t Ruling Out Paid DLC for Super Mario Odyssey

“If there was a really cool idea for us to do, then we would certainly be thinking about DLC”

There once was a time when the words “Nintendo” and “DLC” never came together in a sentence. While the company played along during the ill-fated Wii U era with Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, the Switch has seen a healthy dose of post-release DLC for first and thirty party games such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Fire Emblem WarriorsSuper Mario Odyssey, arguably the Switch’s biggest game, hasn’t received paid DLC but it is getting a free update this month that will add new content to its already beefy package. Although, that isn’t to say that Nintendo isn’t considering the notion of paid DLC for Mario’s latest adventure.

In an interview with Game Informer, Super Mario Odyssey producer Yoshiaki Koizumi says that he is open to the idea. He had this to say:

“There’s a lot of volume [in Super Mario Odyssey]. That was a big focus in development. Give the player tons to do. We pushed ourselves to create as much as we could. I can’t announce anything specifically today, but of course, if there was a really cool idea for us to do, then we would certainly be thinking about DLC.”

Hmm, what sort of content would you be willing to pay for in Super Mario Odyssey? New worlds perhaps? Or different playable characters?

The free software update for the game is arriving this month where it will add a new mode called Luigi’s Balloon World. In it, players can hide balloons across the game’s many kingdoms for other players to find. There are a bunch of new costumes being added as well.
