Blast from the Past: Chrono Trigger Launches on Steam

Go On a Time Traveling Adventure in This Classic RPG!

Chrono Trigger, a Japanese RPG that involves time traveling to different historical periods, launched on Steam this Tuesday for $14.99. The PC version includes the original game with updated graphics and sound along with extra levels.

The two extra levels, “Dimensional Vortex” and “Lost Sanctum” both first appeared in the Nintendo DS and mobile releases of the game. Square Enix has also updated the controls for PC and there’s game controller support. They’ve also added a new autosave feature along with the original game’s save function.

Those that purchase the limited edition of the game on Steam before April 2nd will receive several free digital bonuses including six wallpapers and a digital song file that contains the medley of five songs.

Surprisingly, the Steam version of the game has received largely negative reviews so far. Several users have described the Steam version of Chrono Trigger as a poor port, with one Steam user suggesting that players would be better off buying the Nintendo DS version of the game or even using an emulator.

“A very lazy port of the mobile version of the game,” wrote a Steam user in their review. “The tap overlay is still there as if you should be clicking it with a mouse even when you play with a gamepad. Just overall bad UI and the aliasing of the sprites was unnecessary.”

“I’ll be sticking to the GBA or SNES version instead,” the user added.

Have you purchased the Steam version of Chrono Trigger yet? If so, what do you think of the port? Do you think that it is an important version of the game to own or was this port completely unneeded? Please let us know your thoughts and opinions in the comments section!
