DLC Content and the Switch Go Together Perfectly Says Nintendo
Since its launch back in March Nintendo has put together a stellar lineup of games for the Switch. And it’s not just the games, but the DLC as well! Nintendo has released a season pass for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2, as well as a whole bunch of new content and updates for Splatoon 2. In a recent interview with IGN, a Nintendo representative talks about why the Switch is a great fit for DLC content, as well as what the future may have in store for us!
Shinya Takahasi, general manager of Nintendo’s Entertainment Planning and Development division, recently discussed the success of DLC content on the Switch in a recent interview with IGN. “I think that titles that you download when you purchase have a very good compatibility with the idea of additional content. I believe the Nintendo Switch, compared to most of our recent hardware, makes some of the best use of the ability to download titles in their entirety, since it’s a console that you can also carry as a portable.” Taskahasi also explained that there is a lot of consideration that goes into figuring out which titles would be best suited for DLC content. “We certainly like to think about which software titles would have a great value for additional content to be added.”
In addition to the success of the DLC, Takahashi also shared some interesting tidbits about what new hardware changes may be coming down the pipe. Though it makes sense to expand the games with more digital content, there is a lot to do in terms of the expansion of the Switch itself.
With the emergence of many fan-made customization options for the Joy-Cons, Takahashi says that Nintendo is considering not only new Joy-Con designs, but perhaps even some brand new attachments. “One of the great strengths of the Nintendo Switch is that though you can play it as a console, you can also separate these two controllers from the hardware. This gives us a lot of possibilities that we could consider for the future in terms of what you could attach. I think that that would be a really good time for us to think about some very different colors or designs applied to [Joy-Cons]. That might be interesting.”
And even if Nintendo doesn’t end up making a design that you’ve been dying to get your hands on, Takahashi is glad that fans are having fun customizing the Switch. “There’s a lot of joy to be had from handmaking something yourself or having all of those customizable possibilities, and we absolutely embrace that. We love to see that.”
