Coming to Retailers in Europe and Australia/New Zealand
Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap, the beautiful remake of the Sega Master System’s Wonder Boy III, will be getting a physical retail release next year for PS4 and Switch. It will cost €39.99 and will hit retailers across Europe and Australia/NZ.
While gamers can play Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap right now from various digital marketplaces like PSN, many fans have been clamouring for a boxed physical release. Thanks to a partnership between HighUp Games and Nicalis, it appears fans have had their wishes answered.
“The Wonder Boy saga on the Sega Master System was my personal Zelda when I was a little kid, and being able to give Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap the full physical retail treatment it deserves fills me with great joy,” says Headup Games founder Dieter Schoeller. “We’ve held the deepest respect for DotEmu and Nicalis, and are proud to collaborate with these two outstanding partners.”
The remake, which was originally released in April, includes all-new hand-drawn visuals, enhanced interface functions, a new playable character (Wonder Girl), and is presented in widescreen HD. Players can also toggle back and forth between the old classic graphics and the updated graphics.
In our original review, we said “Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap is a game for Metroidvania fans. If you’re the kind of fan who wants genre innovation, and modern mechanics, you might want to steer clear. If you’re the kind of fan who still plugs in their Nintendo and likes to see what the origins of modern games look like, then pick this up. And if you’re a fan of the original, then you’ll find this remaster to be everything you could want: beautiful and smooth.”
The retail edition is currently slated for release in the first quarter of 2018. Have you been waiting for a physical Wonder Boy release? Tell us in the comments section below.
