Coming in Late November as Free-to-Play
Nintendo finally revealed Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp during a special Nintendo Direct and it’s coming out on mobile in late November as a free-to-play title. Players can pre-register for the game right now on iOS and Android.
Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp is the latest game in the community simulation series but this time it’s centred on players managing their own campsite instead of a city or town. Despite this, the same level of personalization from previous games are back including decorating the campsite with furniture and buildings. Familiar franchise staples also return like fishing, a real-time day/night cycle, clothing and shoe stores, and yes, Tom Nook is back too with a whole new mortgage for you to pay off! Seasonal events will take place in Pocket Camp throughout the year where limited-time outfits and decorations can be acquired.
One of the core features in Pocket Camp is crafting furniture from collected materials and by helping out your animal pals. The blacksmith, Cyrus, can then convert those materials into new furniture which can be used to decorate your camper van home. Cyrus can also craft other cool things like pools and special places, but they can take longer to build.
You’ll also be able to level up your character and home by decorating your place with furniture that will encourage other animals to visit. This will increase your friendship level, a system that has never been explored in past games.
Even though Pocket Camp is free, it will include microtransactions in the form of Leaf Tickets. These can be traded for items or speed up the building process. They can be earned through regular play or purchased with real money from the shop.
Pocket Camp will allow you to trade items with players on your friend’s list. Adding friends requires exchanging ID numbers which will also allow friends to visit each other’s campsites to get inspired.
Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp is the fourth smartphone game from Nintendo following Miitomo, Super Mario Run, and Fire Emblem Heroes. An Animal Crossing game for mobile seems to be a perfect fit for the platform thanks to its focus on communication and daily play. The series continues to be a big success too with the 3DS game, New Leaf, selling over 11 million copies.
