No New Game Announcement Yet from Sly Cooper and Infamous Devs
PlayStation first-party developer, Sucker Punch, turns 20 today as their co-founder Chris Zimmerman wrote a post on the official PlayStation blog celebrating the studio’s history. First up, Zimmerman doesn’t mention what the studio’s up to next as they’ve been incognito since 2014’s Infamous First Light. However, they do note that Infamous: Second Son‘s inclusion in this month’s batch of free PS Plus games would help celebrate the studio’s 20-year anniversary.
In the post, Zimmerman details the studio’s history and offers some interesting game dev war stories too. For PS2’s Sly Cooper, he amusingly notes that he still has to Google up the spelling for the fake Latin worded, Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus. Besides that, they let on that the game’s original first world swapped order to become a later world as some future powers helped players get through with less frustration just a few months shy of shipping. As for the urban superhero/supervillain Infamous, it originally had an intriguing Animal Crossing element where there was property management too. They scrapped it after six months of trying to make it work. One other funny story Zimmerman mentions is how the series’ Karma system was a fluke as Sony’s Marketing team, more or less, helped flesh that idea indirectly.
So what’s next for the studio? Zimmerman doesn’t really say, but I don’t think we’ve heard the last from the studio this year. After this year’s E3, Shuhei Yoshida noted that Sony still had plenty to show. I think’s a safe bet that we’ll finally get a Sucker Punch reveal for their new game at this year’s PSX.
