Skyrim Adds New Survival Mode Where Cold and Hunger Become Deadly

The soup in Skyrim is about to become a whole lot more valuable. Bethesda announced today that it has released an all-new Survival Mode for Steam beta testing while PS4 and Xbox One getting a crack at it next month.

Skyrim: VR

On their site, Skyrim‘s new mode overhauls the game to include some survival game elements to make your trek through the lands to be even more grueling. For starters, your Khajit assassin will now have to deal with getting hungry over time. If you don’t eat enough, your stamina bar will shrink; conversely, eat enough and you’ll receive a Well Fed bonus. Besides that, the cold is quite deadly in this mode as freezing water in rivers will kill you. When traveling in colder areas, your health bar gradually decreases and your movement speed and lockpick savvy suffers too. To offset the cold, you’ll need to find a source of warmth or some good old soup. If you can’t stand having another bowl of soup, you can always become a Vampire Lord for a natural cold resistance too.

Some other things to note, Fast Travel is taken out in this mode as you’ll either go through by foot or on horseback. Arrows and lockpicks will also now have weight too. As for health regeneration? It’s gone. Instead, you’ll need healing through magic, food, or potions. And, leveling up requires sleeping in the bed too. Overall, it sounds like a more brutal version of the game.

Both PC and console players for Skyrim will get Survival Mode free for one week once it launches on their preferred platform, but no word yet whether Switch’s upcoming port will receive this mode too.
