The Ataribox Will Cost $249-$299 USD When It Ships Next Year
Atari has revealed more information about its upcoming Ataribox console, including first images of a near-final prototype and a release window.
The Ataribox is a return to the console space for the revered gaming company. It will certainly be capable of playing games but it can also stream, run apps, browse the web, and listen to music. It features a Linux-based OS tailored for TV, and because of the open nature of the platform, will allow users the freedom to customize it and even “access and play compatible games from other content platforms.” Additionally, the console will launch with a large catalogue of retro Atari games pre-installed. Atari hasn’t revealed what those titles will be, but they have confirmed it will be extensive.
Design wise, the box is looking pretty slick with the wood edition (made with real wood!) being a definite eye catcher. While it is powered by an AMD processor and Radeon Graphics card, we’re not expecting to see it run Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare anytime soon but it may attract a decent indie developer following. So long as it remains open and is easy to develop and publish on, the Ataribox could be more successful than the disappointing Ouya console.
The Ataribox will be available first on the crowdfunding platform, Indigogo, sometime this fall. It will cost anywhere from $249-$299 USD depending on specific versions and memory configs and will be out late Spring 2018. The company chose Indiegogo in order to give back to the Atari fan community by providing early access, offer special editions, and more.
