Polar Gets the Cutesy Treatment in HD Remake
In a trailer released yesterday, we got the first look at Crash’s mount, a polar bear named Polar, in the upcoming remake of the trilogy, Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy. The cute furry fellow made his original debut in the 2nd game in the series, Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back where he provided transport for Crash in levels like “Bear It”, “Un-Bear-able”, and “Bear Down” (Eat your heart out, Teddie!).
With the spiffy new graphic overhaul in Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, Polar’s features got softened and consequently, he looks more adorable than his original incarnation. The polar bear has also made several appearances in other Crash titles including the two kart racing games.Upon researching this furry friend, it’s interesting to note the character had some villainous roles after Naughty Dog let the IP go to other developers. Sure, one of them is non-canon and he was brainwashed in another, but it’s still bizarre to see him wield a menacing baseball bat in Crash Twinsanity.
Polar is alright, I guess. But, I’m far more curious about Crash’s other mount buddy, Baby T in the upcoming remake. He debuted in the third game Crash Bandicoot: Warped and he looked pretty dopey back then. His green face, a constant grimace that hinted at some of the inner demons he wrestled with while being ridden by Crash. Perhaps, the remake may finally shed some light on Baby T’s backstory and how he came to look as enthusiastic as a kid receiving the Atari’s ET game for Christmas.
