Nintendo Talks Why The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Doesn’t Support the Second Screen for the Wii U GamePad
If you’re a Wii U player of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, you might have noticed a big difference between the 2014 demonstration and what you just got. There’s no support for the Wii U GamePad. Well, thanks to an interview between Nintendo and IGN, we now know why.
In an effort to provide an equal experience in gameplay for both Wii U and Nintendo Switch players, the Wii U GamePad support was removed. The Switch only has one screen, as opposed to the two that come along with the Wii U home console. Hidemaro Fujibayashi explains that when the development began for

Although duel screens might seem ideal for inventory stacking, map navigation, and so on, he also noted that looking back and forth between the two screens actually took away from the Zelda experience. It was just not ideal when compared to the singular screen. Removing the touch features included with the GamePad created a stronger immersion, and in turn “a really strong gameplay experience.”
