Snakebyte Nintendo Switch Foldable Headset for $19.99, the Starter Kit for $19.99 and Carrying Bag $16.99 All Great Value
Well, you got your Nintendo Switch, and you can’t wait to jump into the awesomeness that is Zelda: Breath of the Wild. But then it hits you – what accessories should you buy?! First of all, don’t panic: breathe into a paper bag, count to three, and check out our thoughts on a few recent Switch accessory offerings from Snakebyte – the Switch Foldable Headset, Starter Kit, and Carrying Case. We’ve been giving them rigorous testing in our state-of-the-art labs (ok, our living rooms), and we’ll give you the low-down on whether you should buy them or give them a pass.
First off, we have the Nintendo Switch Foldable Headset. It’s made to be fully portable, having a fold-up design that’s pretty compact when collapsed (you can even put it in the cute little bag included). We like the soft, comfortable ear-pads, and they give nice noise-cancellation. The 40mm drivers gave sound quality right up there with other gaming headphones we’ve used, and they’re a big step up from the handheld’s normal speakers. The headset is plastic, but feels well-made and comfortably light, especially when worn for a long time. Its color scheme of red and grey is more a match for the NES era than the Switch, but still, if you didn’t know you might assume this was an official Switch Headset made by Nintendo themselves. One downside is that it’s not wireless – but at $19.99 MSRP, it isn’t much more costly than in-ear buds, and overall it’s a good value.
Next, we have the Switch Starter Kit. For $19.99 MSRP, you get a variety of items: a Carry Bag, Stereo Earbuds, a Cleaning Cloth, Screen Protector, Control Caps and Cartridge Case. Of these, we really liked the Carry Bag; if you plan on travelling with your Switch (and most players will), this kind of hard case is almost a necessity. It’s light, but durable enough to save your Precious from breaking if it drops. There’s also the Screen Protector – apparently an essential addition for the scratch-prone Switch screen. We found it to be of equal quality to others we’ve seen, and it will do the job nicely in keeping your new baby from scratches.
On the “meh” side are the Control Caps. They’re a bit difficult to put on, and we’re not convinced they are all that necessary. The Switch’s sticks are already pretty easy to use, and grip, so these accessories are less crucial, in our view. But again, at the price, this Starter Kit offers items that would cost you at least that much to buy separately, so we recommend you pick it up.
The sold separately Carrying Bag on the other hands is a great purchase if you want something a little less bulky to haul around. For around $16.99, your Switch console slides into the bag with the Joy-Con controllers attached like a glove. Yes, if you drop it you are screwed but it will protect the console from surface scratches and the durable neoprene material looks and feels pretty good. The zippered pouch on the exterior is a nice touch as well and acts as a perfect spot to store your games. That said, besides a set of ear buds, you won’t be able to fit much else in the pouch.
Overall, the Snakebyte Nintendo Switch Accessories offer a lot of bang for the buck. They aren’t high-end by any stretch but if you have already dropped several hundred bucks on a Switch console, Zelda and maybe even the Pro Controller, Snakebyte’s line of accessories will come as a huge sigh of relief to your wallet.
