Valve’s Gabe Newell Confirmed They will be ‘Three Full Games, not Experiments.’
Valve will be making three full-sized games for VR, according to a report from Kotaku.
Newell explained that developing hardware and software simultaneously is an advantageous position to be in. He referred to Nintendo, explaining that Miyamoto has always had “the ability to think about what the input device is and design a system while he designs games.” Newell wants Valve to use this approach to build “much better entertainment experiences for people.”
No other details are available at present, other than that the games will be developed in Source 2 and Unity.
This news is sure to spark more theories on the eventual release of Half-Life 3, regardless of how realistic those hopes might be. A more grounded plan for Valve would be to release the next IP that will be as big as their other franchises. A tall order, yes, but one they’ve surely managed multiple times before. While some may balk at this commitment to VR, it’s these kinds of investments that will get the tech to the next level of consumer saturation. A powerhouse like Valve making games for VR means more people will be interested in committing to the format. Newell’s company has already changed the face of PC gaming with Steam. Perhaps they will do so again with their work in VR.
