Even when Measured against Skyrim, Fallout 4 comes out as the Flag Ship
Marketing Executive Pete Hines recently stated that Fallout 4 rules as Bethesda’s revenue builder. Since November 2015, the game has augmented the company’s success, leading Hines to claim it as their biggest title surpassing Skyrim. At least, he said as much in an interview with Kinda Funny Gamescast:
“Fallout 4 has gotta be the most successful game we’ve ever launched in our company’s history. More than Skyrim, in terms of what we did.”
Although, Bethesda hasn’t publicized any updated sales numbers, we know Skyrim has sold 20 million copies since its 2014 launch. Fallout 4 sold 12 million on day one. Their records sales are pretty telling, but it would be interesting to see just how far revenue has gone since its mixed reception.
While Fallout 4 has provided more than its share of sandbox fun, wasteland lore, and engaging customization options, fans of the previous installment carried lukewarm responses. Pete Hines addressed this in the interview:
“When you do another one, well it’s not the first one again, there’s gonna be some commonalities. Like, you can’t just react to VATS in Fallout 4 the way that you did in Fallout 3, because in Fallout 3 you saw it for the very first time. You’re like, ‘shit this is a really cool, interesting way to kind of bring targeting different body parts to a first-person shooter but in a way I understand’ […] Well how is that supposed to have the same impact in Fallout 4?”
Hines essentially points to the natural reception of gaming veterans. Without the novelty of previous games, the Fallout franchise suffers. But in the eyes of newcomers and, certainly, many returning fans, Fallout 4 represents a praise-worthy addition to both the shooter and open-world genres. He went on to compare it to Uncharted 4:
“If you played Uncharted 4, and that was your first game, I think you have a very different reaction to what that game is than if, like me, you played 1, 2, and 3 because Uncharted 4 is more of 1, 2, and 3.”
Valid points. But speaking of points, feel free to share yours in the comments. Which game do you measure as Bethesda’s greatest? Do you agree with Hines? Let us know. And for more gaming news and when we’ll see the next Fallout, remember to keep updated with COGconnected.
“Whether it’s Fallout or Elder Scrolls, or whatever it is they’re gonna do next, I think [Bethesda’s] mantra is always ‘we really gotta step up our game.” – Pete Hines
