Fortunately, This Has Not Affected Guerrilla Amsterdam and Horizon Zero Dawn
Sony just confirmed that they will soon shut down their Guerrilla Games studio in Cambridge. Previously known as SCEE Cambridge Studio, Guerrilla Cambridge may represent a first step in Sony’s reorganization of European studios.
Obviously this was a big decision, one that may or may not benefit Sony’s game development going forward. But the PlayStation publisher claimed that it resulted from a need to rearrange focus:
“Whilst we accept that this decision will mean that we risk losing high calibre staff, by focusing on other Studios with exciting new projects in development, (including continued work on PlayStation VR), we believe we will be in a stronger position going forward and able to offer the best possible content of the highest quality to our players.”
And Sony has clarified that shutting down Cambridge was not based on the studio’s delivery of content. They gave us PlayStation VR game RIGS: Mechanized Combat League, PS Vita’s Killzone: Mercenary and have contributed to development of other major PlayStation titles for 19 years. Sony added: “This decision should not take anything away from the incredible games and services that Guerrilla Cambridge has delivered.”
As for the rest of Guerrilla Games, we’ll keep you updated as things move forward. We hope to discover the long-term effect of this decision. Along the way, possibly find out what happened to the staff at Cambridge. For more of the latest on gaming, keep updated with COGconnected. And, like us, look forward to Horizon Zero Dawn on February 28. Happy gaming.
