Well, Michael lots of us have 4K TVs now
Michael Pachter, for some reason or another, is considered a go to analyst in the gaming business. Heโs often quoted while giving his thoughts on various business decisions the big companies make and, for better or for worse, has been known to be right here and there. Pachterโs latest comments come via The 1099, where he spoke about the upcoming Xbox Scorpio. Launching later this year with a massive 6TFLOPS GPU, the console will debut as the most powerful console ever made. Pachterโs thoughts? An over engineered and over promised debacle in the making, apparently.
โIโll wait and see what Scorpio is and what itโs priced but from what Iโve read, itโs probably over engineered. Iโll believe it will run a game at full 4Kโฆ except, do we really need that? And I get the PS4 Pro is weaker, but thereโs a lot of room between 1080p and 4K. 1080p is 2 million pixels, 4K is 8 million pixels. My understanding is that Oculus runs at 2.6 million pixels, so Oculus isnโt even 4K. So when they say Scorpio will be 4K, if Oculus with a $1500 PC canโt be 4K, do you really believe Scorpio, at $400-$500 can be 4K? I donโt know, I want to wait and see. So it sounds great, and everyone is excited, butโฆ who has a 4KTV?โ
The fact is that 4K technology has not only come down significantly in price but itโs also being adopted at a pretty decent rate. Ultimately, these were the same questions raised when we made the jump to HDTVs as well. At some point, the console manufacturers have to make the jump and get ahead of the curve. Sony has done it to a lesser extent with the PS4 Pro and has seen a measure of success so itโs very likely that weโll see a similar success story to the Xbox Scorpio.
