Decision Making Really Matters in Vampyr, New Trailer Shows the Duality of the Protagonist
The city of 1918 London is literally at your mercy in Vampyr, a game by Life is Strange developer, Dontnod Entertainment, set to release for consoles and PC in 2017.  You inhabit the tortured soul of a War time doctor who returns from his duty to find he has contracted vampirism. To make matters worse (or better,) the city is in the grip of an epidemic, so your skills are needed to save lives… or allow you access to a never ending buffet of blood. Gameplay will be shaped heavily by the decisions of the player as you try desperately to hold onto the human aspect of yourself while sating your demonic side.
You need a bit of context to really get the full impact of this new, esoteric trailer, released recently by Dontnod. If you haven’t been keeping up, check out the gameplay trailer for Vampyr, covered here, or check out the E3 trailer. In the wake of a crippling flu epidemic, vampirism is beginning to run rampant in London, attracting also the hunters of these beasts. This game will play like an RPG in the vein of Bioshock or Dishonored, with your vampiric abilities as your only real line of defense against civilians, military, vampire hunters, and roaming vampires alike. But to gain power you must feed on the very people you are sworn to help. Â Check out the new trailer which shows a couple examples of how civilians will have different interpretations about your character.
Apparently, any civilian in the game can be fed upon or spared and not only are you required to feed, but the more innocent souls you consume, the more formidable you can become in battle. The big catch is, that everyone you kill will have a direct impact on the story and the condition of the city. Â From shops closing down, to quest lines changing completely, the real time impact of your decisions is going to force you to carefully consider everything you do. This type of dynamic gameplay has worked really well for games recently, and if Dontnod can pull off what they are promising, Vampyr could be the holy grail of decision based action games.
