Madden Curse Gets Gronk
Back in May, Patriots fans rejoiced as New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski was declared EA Sports Madden 17 cover athlete. Gronk is considered one of the better, if not the best, tight end in the league so the announcement didn’t come as a shock to fans. Gronk is a legitimate NFL stud. He was drafted high in several fantasy drafts but did all those people who spent a high draft pick on Gronk take into consideration the Madden curse? Probably not but they should have. After a year of ups and downs for Gronk, today we learned he will be out for the remainder of the season with a back injury.
A ruptured disc in Rob Gronkowski’s back could mean the entire season (including playoffs) is over for the New England Patriots tight end, who will have surgery tomorrow to repair the injury. The injury is expected to keep Gronkowski out for at least eight weeks. Gronkowksi, 27, has suffered from back problems in the past and missed the entire 2009 season due to back surgery when he was a junior with the Arizona Wildcats. He elected to enter the 2010 NFL draft anyway, where he was selected by the Patriots in the second round.
Interestingly enough Rob Gronkowski gave his thoughts on the curse back in May and lets just say he thinks it’s all hogwash.
Gronk told Esquire: “I don’t believe in the curse. I’ve never really believed in that type of stuff. And Odell [Beckham] last year, with the year he had. Calvin Johnson beat the receiving record when he was on the cover. Richard Sherman went to the Pro Bowl the year he was on it. So I believe all that’s in the way past. Now it’s future time.” Gronk added that being name to the cover of Madden NFL 17 is a “dream come true.”
This is a tough break for Pats and Gronk fans. Gronk is now yet another example of player who has landed the cover and has gone down with a significant injury. This sucks for fantasy owners too. Lets hope he comes back strong next year.
