GameCube Shout-out in New Playstation Plus Ads

Nintendo Hardware Name-Dropped During Latest Playstation Plus Commercial Series

Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe put out a new batch of Playstation Plus ads, wherein a bunch of gamers tell their stories.

“Laura” talks about the first consoles she ever owned. She mentions the PS2 of course, but then she also mentions owning Nintendo’s GameCube. Then they show it, even. Cute little wiggling drawing and everything.

“Tom” talks about how his father was a big PC gamer. Nothing so rare as the Nintendo mention, it still stands out in focused ad series such as this one.

Normally if a commercial mentions a competing console it’s to belittle said product or highlight their own gear’s supremacy. Sony giving a shout-out to the GameCube comes off as downright civilized, even if the system is a few generations old. Perhaps it’s the personal history angle that let the GameCube mention slip by? Surely if this was an ad series focused on the rivalry’s modern chapter it would be more competitive in nature.

If you’re curious, you can check out both of the videos below, and see what they’re all about. The ads’ core focus is online gaming, likely to push the legitimacy and need for a PS Plus subscription.
