GameCube Shout-out in New Playstation Plus Ads

Nintendo Hardware Name-Dropped During Latest Playstation Plus Commercial Series

Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe put out a new batch of Playstation Plus ads, wherein a bunch of gamers tell their stories.

โ€œLauraโ€ talks about the first consoles she ever owned. She mentions the PS2 of course, but then she also mentions owning Nintendoโ€™s GameCube. Then they show it, even. Cute little wiggling drawing and everything.

โ€œTomโ€ talks about how his father was a big PC gamer. Nothing so rare as the Nintendo mention, it still stands out in focused ad series such as this one.

Normally if a commercial mentions a competing console itโ€™s to belittle said product or highlight their own gearโ€™s supremacy. Sony giving a shout-out to the GameCube comes off as downright civilized, even if the system is a few generations old. Perhaps itโ€™s the personal history angle that let the GameCube mention slip by? Surely if this was an ad series focused on the rivalryโ€™s modern chapter it would be more competitive in nature.

If youโ€™re curious, you can check out both of the videos below, and see what theyโ€™re all about. The adsโ€™ core focus is online gaming, likely to push the legitimacy and need for a PS Plus subscription.
