E3 2016: Minecraft Realms Takes Cross-Platform Play to a New Level

Minecraft Realms unites players across all platforms

Finally, the dreams of millions will be realized, as players of Minecraft across Xbox One, Windows PC, and even iOS and Andriod devices. At Microsoft’s E3 2016 presentation today, Mojang unveiled Minecraft Realms, which will allow players of Minecraft across all these aforementioned platforms to play together.

What that means is that with Minecraft Realms, not only can you play Minecraft with your friends and family on multiple devices, but Xbox Achievements are also cross-platform. As we saw in the stage show, you can now earn Xbox Achievements while playing Minecraft on your iPad or Surface, and not just on the Xbox One or PC.

In addition, the presentation showed off another cool feature coming soon – the ability to play Minecraft on the Gear VR. Based on what we saw on stage, that will open up a whole new world (literally) of fun for Minecraft players.

That’s not all the team had in store. The Pocket version of Minecraft is also getting new City Texture Packs, and tweakable AI. The presentation showed off some of these new additions, and we saw mobs repackaged to look like spies, with new abilities, set within a downtown setting. It looks like these new changes are aimed at making Minecraft a real LEGO-like set of tools for players to make what they want, with no limits.
