If you are a fan of turn-based tabletop board games like Mordheim or Warmachine, a new indie project now on Kickstarter will be something you might want to roll the dice on and fund. Called Warbands: Bushido, the new PC game project combines the best elements of tactical board games with card-based classics like Hearthstone, all from the comfort of your PC.
Warbands: Bushido is being developed by Red Unit Studios, which is a team of industry veterans who got together to form a new studio so they could build the games they love. Their expertise really shows in the game’s visual polish, which gives players the illusion that they are playing with real pieces on an actual game-board instead of a computer screen.
This video is in Russian but does show some of the game’s gameplay style:
The game has an isometric, tabletop-style look with miniature-style characters, cards, dice, pre-rendered battlefields and story-mode locations. There are more than 100 various units (paintable, just like real metal figurines!) and heroes planned for release and later additions. The story driven single-player was apparently influenced by Final Fantasy Tactics and Valkyria Chronicles, while multiplayer skirmish is in the best traditions of tabletop wargame classics like the aforementioned Warmachine or Mordheim, but with Hearthstone thrown in.
Warbands: Bushido is currently on Kickstarter hoping to raise $30,000 in order to get funded and release by September, 2016. It has already received $1,900 of that total with 26 days left to go.
