Russian Hackers Exploited PS4 Security Weakness

The recent hacking of PS4 units in Brazil originated with hackers at a Russian web site, who exploited a security weakness in the console.  According to reports, the exploitation process is that a retail PS4, with several games installed on it, has its entire game database and operating system (including NAN/BIOS) dumped onto a hacked PS4 via Raspberry Pi.

No word yet on who the Russian hackers are.  This is the first major security compromise for the PS4.  Although piracy and hacking is more common on PC, consoles do see some piracy.  However, consoles are often a target for hackers – most recently, a DDoS attack brought down the PlayStation Network for most of December 2014, frustrating players for weeks.  Although Sony has not taken any official action yet, they have send Cease-and-Desist letters to stores in Brazil selling the hacked consoles.
