The Legend of the Buried E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial Games Has Been Officially Dug Up

That’s right… a myth no more, the once thought to be urban legend of Atari burying tons of unsold copies of the universally hated E.T. game in the middle of the desert in New Mexico has been proven. Construction workers recently visited the burial site as part of an upcoming documentary that Microsoft is putting together that focuses on the ever changing landscape of the games industry.

It’s hard to believe now but there was a time when games weren’t doing so well and back in 1983 Atari found itself with surplus products and an extra large surplus of the notoriously horrible E.T. game for the Atari 2600. I can vouch for it, it was horrible. After paying millions for licensing rights to produce such a let down was obviously a disappointment. I guess at the time it made perfect sense to carry all this merchandise out to the desert and cover it with dirt. For years this story has lived on in myth and legend and it seems funny that the truth has come out so many years later!
