With consoles like the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One only recently launched, we can only assume that developers are currently developing games that will play on those consoles as well as their predecessors, the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360. However we can only assume that once the PS4 and Xbox One matures, developers will stop development for older consoles and focus on the new ones only, and Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty could be one of those games.
Infinity Ward is the developer behind last year’s Call of Duty: Ghosts. Given that the franchise will be getting a 3 year development cycle, it means that it will only be 2016 that we will see Infinity Ward’s release, since this year’s Call of Duty title will be from Sledgehammer, and 2015’s will be by Treyarch. Back to the topic at hand, a recent job listing on Infinity Ward’s website is currently seeking a lead engineer who can “drive the vision of what a true next gen console title can achieve”.
The job listing also suggests that the developer is looking to develop games for the PS4 and the Xbox One and asks that the candidate have “good working knowledge of modern day GPU hardware and typical performance bottlenecks: Xbox One, PS4, GCN/Kepler + etc.” Now 2016 is still some time away meaning that by the time Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty title is released, there is a good chance that the game might be available for the PS4 and Xbox One only.
There is also a good chance that Treyarch’s title could beat Infinity Ward’s to the punch, although that has yet to be confirmed. Sledgehammer has also yet to confirm if their Call of Duty title will be released on prev-gen consoles, especially since the screenshot that was released was allegedly from next-gen consoles. What do you guys think? Will gamers be done with the PS3 and Xbox 360 in the next two years, or will there still be demand for PS3 and Xbox 360 games?
