Infinite Minigolf – Aims to Be a Hole in One

Infinite Minigolf Preview

Zen Studios’ Infinite Minigolf. is now available through Steam Early Access. While I have to admit, I have never been one to go out and seek a minigolf game to kill some time, I was pleasantly surprised with Infinite Minigolf as it was imaginative and very easy to pick up.

The only available theme you can play as of right now is the Giant Home stage which puts the mini golfers in, well, a giant home. After choosing your desired player, you are in the midst of a giant bedroom with either a very simple or very intricate play area. As you adjust your ball and figure out the perfect swing, players will have to try and putt towards coins, power ups or even try for a hole in one.

“Though I know I shouldn’t be putting it as hard as possible, it’s still fun seeing the ball roam around the course and going through various obstacles.”

The gameplay itself is really easy and so far seems to be great for die-hard mini golf fans to those who are picking it up for the very first time. In the starting area, players will be able to place their ball anywhere in the designated spot. Once you have plunked it down, use the right mouse button to properly aim it to where you want it to go. By holding the left mouse button and moving your mouse back and forth, a gauge will appear which will indicate the putting power. Green is a nice light put, yellow a medium swing and red is hitting the poor ball as hard as possible. Though I know I shouldn’t be putting it as hard as possible, it’s still fun seeing the ball roam around the course and going through various obstacles.

Another feature which is available during the Steam Early Access is the Editor Mode. This is probably the core of the game for as long as there are players who are willing to create stages, there is literally an endless opportunity to minigolf. While first entering Editor Mode, I found it extremely hard to navigate my pieces to fit together and it took quite some getting used to. Once I finished building my first track I had found that it had actually gotten a lot easier to switch between tracks and objects and it’s a lot of fun to see what kind of craziness I could throw into a stage.

As of right now, glancing at the main menu we know there’s going to be Online Matches and Duel modes, however we will have to wait for those to become available. For now we have a 2 player local match that is available for players.

“Infinite Minigolf might be a bit bare right now, but I think it will eventually worth the fifteen dollar asking price.”

Although it’s missing a lot of content still, I had a great time putting around. The music is upbeat and great for the background, the character designs, while a bit childish, are still fun and a bit quirky. The Giant House theme is great at first but I imagine some players might grow tired of it after awhile. Luckily there are more themes to come. Infinite Minigolf might be a bit bare right now, but I think it will eventually worth the fifteen dollar asking price.
