Possibility of Cross-Play in Borderlands 3’s Future Remains Murky
Borderlands 3 has some really big ideas in store for their multiplayer mode. Unfortunately, at least to begin, the latest installment in the Borderlands franchise is not going to have cross-play capabilities. Looking towards the future of the popular feature in the game, it’s unclear if the game will ever receive it. Time will only tell.
It seems that Gearbox and 2K Games aren’t on the same page when it comes to the increasingly popular feature. CEO of Gearbox, Randy Pitchford, says in a tweet, “Some folks may be speculating that this thing tomorrow maybe about cross-play. Tomorrow’s thing is awesome but *not* about cross-play. But, Good News: We are committed to supporting cross-play for Borderlands 3 with our partners as soon as practicable after launch”
Pitchford continues, “to be clear, there will not be any cross-play functionality in Borderlands 3 at launch as we work closely with our partners to create a positive cross-play experience as soon as practicable. We are committed to cross-play on as many platforms as possible.”
In comparison, a representative from 2K Games states “Cross-play is something we’re looking at closely, but we don’t have anything to confirm or announce at this time.”
It is clear from these two messages that there needs to be a conversation regarding the possibility of cross-play. While Gearbox appears to prioritize it, 2K Games seem not to have the same level of urgency. It is anyone’s guess what the upcoming announcement is going to be, but likely it will involve multiplayer.
