Coalition Studio Head Says Removing Smoking is of Personal Importance
The Gears of War Franchise has never been shy from leaning into its mature rating. While Gears of War 5 is still retaining all its blood and gore, the game is going to be missing a particular element often associated with bad-asses killing; smoking.
In a statement, Coalition head Rod Fergusson says “I’ve seen firsthand the devastating impact of smoking. It’s always been important for me to not use smoking as a narrative device, which is why we made the conscious choice to avoid highlighting or glorifying smoking in Gears 5 and throughout the Gears of War Universe moving forward.”
No previous characters in any Gears of War installment are prominent smokers. This means the change is likely to have little effect on most people’s experiences. Furthermore, this is evidence of the many innovations Coalition is planning to install in Gears of War 5.
Fergusson has responded to the criticisms of removing smoking from an M-rated game, saying “o be fair, this isn’t entirely accurate. I’ve been against smoking from the beginning and have worked hard to not make it a part of our franchise. Ever notice that the Dizzy concept art for Gears 2 has a cigarette but the actual character in the game doesn’t? I stopped it.”
