Marvel’s Avengers Writer and Director Claim Their Hero Line-Up Mirroring the MCU is a Coincidence

This All Seems Just a Little Too Coincidental

On Monday, Square Enix gave audiences their first glimpse at the highly-anticipated, upcoming Marvel’s Avengers video game. The game includes many of the familiar superheroes that fans have come to expect; Iron-Man, Hulk, Black Widow, Captain America, and Thor. It didn’t seem like a huge leap to assume Square Enix was leveraging the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to help promote their games. It now appears this is not the case. Shaun Escayg, the writer and creative director of Marvel’s Avengers claims it is a total coincidence.

Sitting down with IGN’s Joshua Yehl, Escayg shared some insight into how creating the game unfolded. He says, “When we came at this, we’re just like, ‘What’s the most original story we can tell?’ Literally. West Coast Avengers… is a comic that we started with. Just getting a premise of how can we tell this, how we can pull out our favorite parts of the Avengers and see where we can create one, the most conflict; two, give us the creative canvas we need to make this the most exciting game possible. So, we didn’t really approach it from the movies. We didn’t. We actually approached it more from the comics”.

Shaun Escayg expands on this point, stating “Best conflict: that’s another key factor. Bruce/Tony. Those are two different views on the Avengers. Two different views on superheroes. Two different perspectives. Widow/Cap. Who’s in charge? Who’s not in charge? There’s a reason we chose it, narratively”.

It seems a little for fortuitous and coincidental for this to be entirely true. The MCU has been flirting its character roster for nearly a decade and the success of the franchise is an inspiration to all other companies. By using the same character made popular by the films, Square Enix and the Marvel’s Avengers team are helping to ensure their own success. It just doesn’t seem as feasible that a game sporting other, less renown, heroes would be as universally popular.

Additionally, another interesting fact to consider is that the West Coast Avengers is founded by Hawkeye, with Iron Man later joining as a first recruit. This begs an important question, where is Hawkeye?
