5 – Erased (Boku Dake Ga Inai Machi)

Plot: The story follows Satoru Fujinuma, a detached 29 year old manga artist with the inability to express himself following his debut. However, what sets him apart from everyone else is that he has the supernatural ability to travel back in time before the event of a tragedy, allowing him to alter the course of actions which results in preventing life threatening accidents from occurring.

After being framed for the murder of someone close to him, Satoru finds himself thrust 18 years into the past. He begins to realize that the murder may be connected to the kidnapping of one of his classmates and it’s up to him to uncover the truth of the murderer to protect those he cares about in the present.

Why it’s good: With amazing animation and a great story line, this anime will be sure to hit you with overwhelming feelings. Erased has an amazing premise that touches on sensitive topics that will have viewers holding their breath till the end of each episode. The musical score is truly fantastic and really adds to each scene, whether the moment is light and fluffy or dark and gritty. Fans of the psychological thriller genre should definitely give this series a go!

4 – Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu

Plot: Rakugo storytelling is one of the oldest and most important of the Japanese arts, and for Yotaru, this is his chance to build a new life after being released from prison. Seeking the help of Yakumo, a famous comedic storyteller, Yotaru begins to adapt to his new life when he meets Konatsu. Under the care of Yakumo, she wishes to become a performer as well, but is unable to because she is a woman.

Why it’s good: While the animation isn’t incredible or ground breaking, it does such justice in capturing the emotions of the characters, really making them come to life. With a rich narrative and a very well laid out and fleshed out story, it will be sure to move anyone who is into such genres.

3 – KonoSuba: God’s Blessing On This Wonderful World! (Kono Subarashi Sekai Ni)

Plot: High school student and shut-in, Kazuma Satou, falls victim to an embarrassing accident that leads him to an early demise. As he reawakens in the after life, he is greeted by a beautiful, albeit a little rude, girl named Aqua who claims to be a goddess guiding youth whose lives were cut short. Aqua offers Kazuma a choice: to go to heaven or to get sent to another world to defeat the Demon King. Of course Kazuma’s gamer instincts kick in, and he chooses to start a new life in a real world RPG.

Why it’s good: This season’s best parody anime by far. While the story does start off with the death of its main character, the circumstances behind it are hilarious and bound to really grab anyone’s attention. While the animation isn’t the grandest, it certainly fits the theme and vibe of this anime. It’s great in the aspect that it pokes fun at itself and its characters; it isn’t the whole stereotypical premise where every person in their party is extremely good at what they do, when it reality, it’s actually quite the opposite.
