It’s hard to believe that the holidays are only a few weeks away. Soon, the stores will be bustling with shoppers, searching for that special something for their loved ones. Here at COG, we’re putting together a few lists for the gamers in your life to ease the pain of searching for that perfect present. Have a Nintendo fan in your household? Here are 5 great games that will be a very welcome surprise when they tear open the wrapping paper on Christmas morning. Keep an eye out over the next week for a new buyer’s guide every day covering all the consoles, PC and some great gear you can get your hands on too.

Super Smash Bros. Wii U

This long awaited sequel makes its way to the Wii U with a “smash”. With endless gameplay, an incredible roster of fan favourites, beautiful graphics and modes that include up to 8 players, Super Smash Bros is a must own for any Nintendo fan. I highly recommend purchasing the 3DS version as well if you have both consoles, as the 3DS can be used as a controller in the Wii U version, and purchasing both will get you a free soundtrack from Club Nintendo if both games are registered before Jan 13th, 2015.

Bayonetta 2

This is definitely a little something for the mature gaming crowd. The witch is back, this time with a new haircut and wicked new moves, including the Umbran Climax. With Jeanne and Rodin as playable characters, play with a friend in two player online co-op. The insane and fast paced action is sure to be a hit with the older teens in your household. Also a nice bonus, a free copy of the first game is included with your purchase.

Mario Kart 8

If you are looking for something amazingly fun to play with the entire family, look no further. There’s something here for everyone, a roster filled with favourite Nintendo characters, beautiful colourful graphics, and challenging tracks with some fantastic effects and interesting shortcuts. Play split screen with up to 4 controllers for some great couch co-op time with the family. The game includes a fun single player campaign to race through, full of unlockable characters and vehicles and when single player grows tiresome, you can take the fun online for some insane 12 player races facing off against players worldwide. I highly recommend adding the new DLC to the game, which adds Cat Peach, Link and Tanooki Mario to the roster, and 8 additional tracks including my new personal favourite, Excitebike.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

</span><span style="font-size: 13px;">http://youtu.be/32nV2PKIv5Y

One of the best parts of Super Mario 3D World was the little mini games scattered throughout the game featuring the the adventurous Captain Toad. Alongside the adorable Toadette, they find themselves traversing through tricky mazes and facing off against dangerous enemies in a quest to reach the gold star at the end of each level. Truly deserving of his own game, the unique 3D puzzles and challenging gameplay make this a must own for any Nintendo fan.

Hyrule Warriors

While Zelda fanatics patiently (or not so patiently) wait for the release of Majora’s Mask on the 3DS or the new Zelda game to release on Wii U, there’s Hyrule Warriors to tide them over. Not to be confused with the tradition Zelda RPG gameplay, Hyrule Warriors plays much like a Dynasty Warriors game, hacking and slashing through waves upon waves of enemies. Still, it uses locations, weapons and characters from the much loved series, and fans of the series will no doubt want to add this to their collection.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

Donkey Kong County made its debut way back on the SNES and was renowned as one of the best platformers of its time. DK is back with developing duties being handed from Rare to Retro Studios but that platforming magic, and accompanying difficulty, is back. It’s beautiful, amazingly fun to play and more imaginative than ever. Join  DK along with his playable sidekicks Diddy, Dixie and Cranky for a great adventure you’ll only find on the Wii U. Tropical Freeze is just  another game in a list of shining Wii U exclusives but seeing as this one was released earlier in the year you can likely find it for a great price if you look around a bit!
