5 Theaters of War We Need to See in Battlefield V

3. The Burma Campaign

The Burma Campaign was one of the deadliest campaigns that Britain fought in World War 2. Its series of battles and skirmishes took place in the British colony of Burma (known today as Myanmar) and the surrounding countries. It involved thousands of soldiers from several countries including China, the United States and Britain’s many colonies fighting against Imperial Japan.

If Battlefield V would take place in Burma during the war, it would be a singleplayer campaign that takes place in one of the most obscure (yet pivotal) fronts of the war. Allied soldiers had to fight their Japanese enemies in jungles and rice paddies and had to deal with the infamous monsoon rain seasons. Levels involving ambushing Japanese soldiers in the jungle, sniping missions that use the thunderstorms during monsoon rains to cover the sound of gunfire and close quarters fighting in Buddhist temples or Southeast Asian cities would all be possible if Battlefield V’s singleplayer were to take place in the Burma campaign.

4. World War 2 in China

The war between China and Imperial Japan was a very complicated one. China wasn’t exactly unified during the early 20th century, with a civil war being fought between the U.S.-backed Chinese nationalists and the Soviet-backed Chinese communists. However, in the 1930s, Imperial Japan represented an even bigger threat to the two warring factions so the two sides decided to unify and fight a common enemy in what is known as the Second Sino-Japanese War.

The Second Sino-Japanese War was also part of World War 2 and despite the incredible importance of the victory of unified China over Imperial Japan (along with its immense casualties which reached to the tens of millions), this is a front that has rarely (if ever) been shown in WW2 games.

The opportunities would be endless for Battlefield V if it chose this setting: Chinese resistance fighters, under the cover of night, sabotaging Japanese military infrastructure in occupied China, Chinese soldiers in house-to-house fighting in the Battle of Shanghai or fighting alongside American troops in Burma. This front of World War 2 provides various gameplay opportunities that the creative developers at DICE could definitely take advantage of if they wanted to.

5. The War in Belarus

The Belarusian resistance movement lasted from 1941 to 1944 and took place behind German military lines in the Soviet Union. Josef Stalin, the leader of the Soviet Union at the time, urged all Soviet citizens to resist their Nazi occupiers and Belarusian partisan fighters did just that.

Even though the partisan fighters were basically on their own, they fought bravely against the Nazis by launching multiple operations that involved sabotage and hit-and-run attacks. The partisans were usually based in the rural parts of Belarus and used their environment to their advantage. Their camps were often based in the woods of the country and it wasn’t uncommon for them to launch their attacks on German soldiers before disappearing back into the vast forests.

The resistance movement also allows Battlefield V to tell a darker and more serious story. The Nazis were especially brutal on the Eastern Front of the war, committing genocide against the Soviet Union’s Jewish citizens and mercilessly slaughtering civilians. The most famous depiction of the resistance movement in film would be Come and See, a movie about a Belarusian boy who joins an anti-Nazi partisan group.

In Conclusion

World War 2 is one of the deadliest conflicts to have ever been fought in human history and it encompassed the entire globe. Nearly every country participated in some way in the conflict but often the games based on the war have a tendency to only focus on a few specific theaters of the war. Usually, we play as Americans, Russians or the British in these games and while all three countries played huge parts in the war they weren’t the only ones that fought it.

There were colonial troops that fought, resistance fighters in Eastern and Northern Europe, female soldiers and much, much more. We think that Battlefield V could be a perfect chance to show any of the listed perspectives or any other theaters of war, perspectives that have rarely ever been shown in games.
