5 Terrifying Horror Games This Year That Will Scare You Silly

Layers of Fear – PC (Release Date Aug. 27, 2015)

As great writers like Poe and Lovecraft showed us, there is perhaps nothing more disturbing than the evil depths to which the human mind itself is capable of sinking.  Literature and movies have attempted, at times, to show us, as an audience, what goes on in the mind of a truly disturbed individual – but what if we were actually trapped inside that mind?  This, surely, would be the most terrifying prison of all.

In Layers of Fear, developed by Bloober Team, that is exactly what you experience – a twisted rollercoaster-ride through the psyche of a painter; his obsession with finishing his “masterpiece” demands a piece of your sanity to complete it.  You will see disturbing, grotesque images (all in gorgeous new-gen graphics, of course), and the 19th century setting will only add more creepiness to the atmosphere.

As an unwilling passenger in the sick mind of the game’s protagonist, you will feel helpless, trapped and unsure what is real and what is fantasy.  One thing you will be sure of – that this hellish title will be pure horror-game heaven.  We don’t have much actual footage of the game yet – but we did get to Preview the game, and we can assure you it lives up to the hype.  Plus, this Teaser trailer does set the unsettling tone very effectively:

So forget all that harsh, burning sunshine and get back into your attic – and remember the pure, life-affirming joy that can only come from soiling yourself in terror.  With these five upcoming horror titles, you’ll quickly forget summer with all its headache-inducing laughter, and revel once more in those dark, sleepless nights of the soul.  No need to thank me – your screams of terror are all the thanks I need.
