10 Best Video Game Dogs in Honor of National Dog Day (Aug 26)

10 Best Video Game Dogs

Today, August 26th, is National Dog Day. That might not mean much to you, but as a fan of dogs both real and virtual, it’s one of my favorite days of the year. As far as I’m concerned, every day should be “Dog Appreciation Day,” so it’s nice to see man’s best friend get their well-deserved props (and treats, of course).

Dogs have been there for me in my real life (they’re really good listeners provided you have food in your hand), and I see them just as often in video games. In fact, 2015 seemed like the year of the dog. High profile games such as Fallout 4, Life is Strange, and Undertale all had lovable four-legged friends.

To celebrate all of these fantastic canines, I’ve come up with a list of the 10 best video game dogs. If your favorite dogs didn’t make the list, then don’t fret. I’m sure they are good dogs as well!

D-Dog

I’m not usually one who would subject a dog to dangerous situations, but D-Dog is trained to be out on the field. He’s the heroic partner of Snake in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and I killed hundreds of soldiers with help from D-Dog. How many dogs can use a knife to attack people? That’s why D-Dog is on the list, as he’s more talented than any Nintendog.

Koromaru

There are a lot of dogs on this list, but only one can summon a persona. Koromaru is a stray Shiba Inu (the undisputed best breed of dogs), who ends up joining SEES, and ends up helping the group save the world. That is a pretty impressive résumé for the Persona 3 star!

Missile

Based off Shu Takumi’s actual dog, Missile is one of the stars of Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective. He’s an overly excitable Pomeranian that loves to bark, and has one of the best character arcs in the entire game. Nobody who has played Ghost Trick has walked away hating Missile, as he’s one of the best gaming characters ever, let alone dogs.
