Updated (07/03/18):

And just like that, we now have confirmation that the August 21st release date is official! SEGA dropped a new announcement trailer that you can view below.

Original Story:

The release date for the updated versions of Shenmue I and Shenmue II has seemingly been leaked by the Microsoft store. According to the listing, fans can expect to play the combo package next month on August 21st.

This release date lines up with our previous report about several Eastern-European retail sites also listing an August 21st release for the collection. There is no official confirmation from SEGA so far outside of a vague “later this year” statement. They are to be released for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

Below is an overview of the game, courtesy of the Microsoft store:

“A tale of revenge.

In 1986, teenage jujitsu artist Ryo Hazuki returns to the dojo of his father, Iwao Hazuki, only to witness his murder by a Chinese man, Lan Di. Lan Di steals a mysterious artifact known as the Dragon Mirror. Ryo vows to avenge his father’s death and sets out tracing Lan Di’s path.”

According to the description, there will be an updated user interface, fully scalable screen resolutions, and Japanese audio available for the first time for a global audience. There will also be a choice for modern and classic controls.

Despite boasting visual and gameplay improvements, SEGA has been reluctant to call both ports remasters. The original Shenmue was released in Japan for the Dreamcast in 1999 and in North America in 2000. The sequel came out on the original Xbox in 2002 and was the only way to play it in North America. Dreamcast owners in Japan and Europe, however, saw versions released in their regions in 2001.

A successful Kickstarter campaign for Shenmue III launched in 2015. It is currently slated for a 2019 release on PC and PS4.
