This Resident Evil 2 Remake Gameplay Looks Absolutely Terrifying

If You Were Worried About The RE2 Remake Losing The Original Game’s Atmosphere Then Don’t Be!

New demo gameplay for the upcoming RE2 remake, officially (but confusingly) titled Resident Evil 2, was shown on Tuesday and it definitely looks like this remake is going to maintain the survival horror atmosphere of the original game!

Dark, claustrophobic, and desperate are the types of vibes that gameplay is giving off and here’s hoping that the entire game can keep up that terrifying atmosphere!

Aside from current-gen graphics and a modern control scheme, one of the other new features is the Resident Evil 4-style over-the-shoulder (OTS) camera. Even though many modern third-person shooters use that camera style, it’s been a very divisive feature in the Resident Evil fanbase.

Its critics say that this type of camera ruins the survival horror aspect of both the gameplay & the atmosphere but its proponents argue that an OTS camera is pretty much required for third-person shooters these days and that this modern camera perspective is actually compatible with traditional Resident Evil horror.

Mike Lunn, a brand manager at Capcom, explained that the Resident Evil 2 remake’s OTS camera was implemented because Capcom is “building a new game”, not just exactly copying the original game.

“We’re building a new game, this isn’t a remake of the original,” Lunn said of the game that is definitely a remake. “It is a full, new game that we really want to push. The idea of having over-the-shoulder, the pinpoint accuracy of really trying to take down zombies, it felt better for this experience so that’s where we went.”

What do you think of this OTS camera for the RE2 remake? Do you think that it’ll mesh with the survival horror gameplay that Capcom is going for or will it turn out to be an imperfect way to modernize a horror game classic like Resident Evil 2?

Resident Evil 2 will release on January 25, 2019 for the PC, Xbox One & PS4.
