Naughty Dog Confirms Multiplayer is Back in The Last of Us Part 2

Factions Mode Will Return in The Last of Us Part 2

People sometimes forget that the original The Last of Us shipped with a surprisingly fun and interesting multiplayer mode called Factions. It has a relatively strong community and is still being played on PS3 and PS4. Since it was first ever revealed, Naughty Dog hasn’t said a peep about whether multiplayer will return for The Last of Us Part 2. However, thanks to recent statements from the developer, it’s now been confirmed that the much-anticipated sequel will, in fact, include multiplayer.

“Factions is coming back,” said co-director Anthony Newman in an interview with GameSpot. Co-director Kurt Margenau piped in as well: “Multiplayer is coming back. We’re not going to talk details yet about what form that takes, but we can confirm there will be multiplayer.”

Factions involve “players lead[ing] a clan of survivors through 12 weeks, either as “Fireflies” (yellow) or “Hunters” (blue). Every match counts as one day and players are tasked to gather supplies to maintain their clan’s progress and growth. There are three gameplay modes too including Supply Raid, Survivors, and Interrogation. It’s a safe bet that these modes will make a return in the new game with the possibility of some new ones.

While The Last of Us series is known for its rich and emotional storytelling, it’s nice to know that Factions will make a comeback for anyone that can’t get enough of Naughty Dog’s brutal world.

The Last of Us Part 2 made one hell of an impression at E3 with a lengthy gameplay demo featuring Ellie. Make sure you check it out below, it’s a must see!
