Cumberbatch was riding in an Uber with his wife, Sophie Hunter, when he spotted a gang of four people who were assaulting a cyclist. He then ran out of the car towards the attackers, reportedly yelling, “Leave him alone!” Cumberbatch and his Uber driver were eventually able to cause the group of attackers to flee. The police say that they haven’t been able to find and arrest the attackers yet.

When asked why he bravely intervened in the attempted robbery, Cumberbatch had this to say: “I did it out of, well, I had to, you know.”

Deliveroo, the food delivery company that the cyclist worked for, thanked Cumberbatch for his courage in a statement.

“Deliveroo riders are heroes delivering millions of meals to hungry customers right across the country. Their safety is our priority and any violence against riders is totally unacceptable,” their statement read.

“We’d like to thank Benedict Cumberbatch for his heroic actions. On behalf of everyone at Deliveroo: thank you so much.”
