Rage 2 Is Going To Use A New Engine

The Next ‘Rage’ Is Looking Pretty Good So Far!

Rage 2 seems to differ from its 2011 predecessor in a lot of ways especially when it comes to its vibrant graphical style and zany, over the top tone. Recently, one of its developers revealed another difference: it’ll be using the same engine used in the Just Cause series.

Rage 2

This decision makes sense since Rage 2 is being worked on by both id Software and Avalanche Studios. There’s also the fact that Just Cause’s engine would probably lend itself better to the open-world design of the upcoming Rage sequel instead of idTech 5 or 6 since neither of those engines have ever been used to make huge current-gen open-world games before.

The Just Cause games are known for being set in massive open-worlds and the most recent entry, Just Cause 3, had a map size of 400 square miles. Seems like since its being made with such a powerful engine, Rage 2 will also be set in an enormous open-world. Fortunately, we’ll be finding out even more about the game (and other projects that Bethesda has been working on) at E3!

What do you think of this decision to replace the idTech engine with the Just Cause (or “Apex”) engine? Is this a good idea or should they have stuck with id Software’s engine? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section!

Rage 2 is scheduled to come out in Spring 2019 for the PC, Xbox One and PS4.
