Fortnite and God of War Made April a Record-Breaking Month

Profits Increase by Billions Over Last Year

The results are in, and we can confirm that games are great. Epic Games’ Fortnite: Battle Royale and Sony’s God of War broke records this past month, contributing to stellar video game profits overall. April witnessed a year-on-year increase in sales, the result of an addition 44% consumer spending.

Fortnite Battle Royale

Our latest intel comes from research firm SuperData. Previously confirmed, God of War was the fastest-selling PS4 exclusive of all time and has sold more than 3.1 million units. GI.biz confirms the game more than doubled the sales of its predecessor, Uncharted 4. Moreover, it’s currently sitting at a 94 on Metacritic, which means the game commercially and critically exceeded its peers.

Meanwhile, Fortnite managed to jetpack past its previous revenue record. The game accumulated $296 million across PC, console, and mobile, SuperData reports. Certainly, it doesn’t hurt that the IP is one of the most accessible multiplayer experiences in gaming, which is why it witnesses the largest amount of monthly active users. Further, it doesn’t hurt that Epic Games is persistently providing updates and listening to fan feedback. Despite a few issues it has stirred up in mainstream media, Fortnite only seems to be growing.

Interestingly enough, GTA V ended its streak of year-on-year sales increases, dropping by 9%. Despite this and a lack of revenue increase across PC games, Worldwide digital spending grew by 23% for the month of April, bringing in $9.09 billion. It’s safe to stay that console and mobile gaming garnered the most interest last month. Time will tell if this trend remains, so stay tuned for updates.
